The Role of External Review in Improving Performance
24 December 2001A summary and analysis by Alistair McIntosh of this important Treasury sponsored paper on the future of external inspection. Sir Michael Lyons (ex Birmingham Council CEO) was co-author of the report with assistance from Adrienne Roberts (formerly AD for Housing at Birmingham). The Best Value Inspection regime is subject to criticism and challenge with significant reforms suggested. In some ways the revised proposals share similarities with the inspection regime developed by the Housing Corporation. Lyons wants to see inspection tailored to the specific needs of an authority as determined by a base line assessment undertaken every four or five years. This report gives the first indications about how the Government might distinguish between the categories of performance mooted in the Local Government White Paper

Swale Housing Association Report Card
13 November 2001Summary of the findings of HQN inspection of services at Swale HA that was sent to all its tenants. This is the first time that inspection results have been communicated directly to tenants and the Corporation has looked closely at this Report Card as they seek to refine their own reporting tools. Swale HA is currently analysing the replies that tenants have made to the tear off slip and these will be summarised shortly. So far most tenants that have responded agree with the conclusions set out in the Report Card
