Allocations: fair to whom?

Local communities care about housing allocations, and landlords need to juggle the needs of the individual – for a home, for support, for a chance – with the needs of the community, to recover after crime, to build social cohesion and to create aspirations. Landlords also need to balance their books: poor allocations cost time and money in voids, re-lets and management.

We will consider current legislation and guidance (in brief), work together through case studies and practical exercises, and share good practice amongst participants on the day, to develop a practical understanding of:

  • The law about allocations
  • Why allocations matter to landlords, applicants, communities and policy makers
  • What does fairness mean locally?
  • How can allocations support communities better?
  • How do we deal with risky applicants such as (ex-) offenders?
  • How to communicate clearly about allocations to individuals and to communities
  • Allocations and effective management: making best use of resources
  • Future policy – promoting migration, and changing tenure patterns.

Who should attend?

This practical course is designed for everyone who works within allocations and lettings and with the communities they impact upon: not only allocations officers, choice-based lettings managers, housing options advisors and housing policy officers, but also housing management, neighbourhood staff and tenant representatives. It affects all landlords, strategic housing authorities, and tenant scrutiny panels.
